Our vision is to work towards the betterment of the most vulnerable, the homeless in the United States. Through your support and our human service programs, we are committed to providing resources to those experiencing homelessness and creating peace within our communities.
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there were roughly 554,000 homeless people living somewhere in the United States on a given night in 2017. A total of 193,000 of those people were forced to live on streets and had no access to transitional housing or emergency shelters. In 2017, the total number of homeless people has increased by 0.7% year-over-year. The number of unsheltered homeless grew even more with a jump of 9% from 2016.
Lack of affordable housing is one of the reasons why families have to suffer. 80% of construction projects in urban areas replace old and affordable housing. 10.3% of tenants were reported to have extremely low income. More than 70% of households with low income spent more than half of their income on utilities and housing. Around 20% of the homeless population is employed, but low wages make it impossible to maintain housing.
According to the data, wages in the United States have not kept pace with the increase in cost of living which leads to widening gap in income inequality. Poverty, unemployment, and low wages are some of the leading causes of homelessness. Nearly one-third of the homeless population suffer from severe mental illness. National Coalition for the Homeless reveals that mentally unstable people are willing to accept services and treatment.
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also identifies the increasing number of homeless veterans. The number of homeless veterans increased by 585 people between 2016 and 2017. Veterans make up about 12% of the adult homeless population.
The first step is to recognize homelessness as a complex problem and then bring the community, civic, and the private sector on the same page.
